ischemia reperfusion injury

MONDO:0005203

Adverse functional, metabolic, or structural changes in ischemic tissues resulting from the restoration of blood flow to the tissue (reperfusion), including swelling; hemorrhage; necrosis; and damage from free radicals. The most common instance is myocardial reperfusion injury.

Disease research snapshot

CureCurrent currently links 3 distinct registered clinical trials to ischemia reperfusion injury through its MONDO disease mappings. 0 of those studies have the registry status “recruiting” (0%). These are registry statuses, not availability guarantees, study results or evidence of effectiveness.

The leading sponsor shown in this linked dataset is London Health Sciences Centre, associated with 1 distinct linked trials. This is a count of records, not a ranking of the sponsor's scientific quality.

The highest-count mapped research city in the current result is Aarhus, Denmark. Only site locations available in the published registry projection are counted; some trial sites may be missing or outdated.

Numbers are derived from CureCurrent's current ClinicalTrials.gov projection and conservative MONDO/RxNorm mappings. See sources, counting rules and limitations and verify eligibility or clinical findings with the original study record.

Background context

Reperfusion injury

Reperfusion injury, sometimes called ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) or reoxygenation injury, is the tissue damage caused when blood supply returns to tissue (re- + perfusion) after a period of ischemia or lack of oxygen (anoxia or hypoxia). The absence of oxygen and nutrients from blood during the ischemic period creates a condition in which the restoration of circulation results in inflammation and oxidative damage through the induction of oxidative stress rather than (or along with) restoration of normal function. Reperfusion injury is distinct from cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (sometimes called "Reperfusion syndrome"), a state of abnormal cerebral vasodilation.

Background only. Canonical identity remains MONDO; clinical-trial relationships come from ClinicalTrials.gov.
